Pick the Right Chair, Stop the Pain

Correct sitting posture requires not only the right knowledge but also the selection of a chair that suits you. When choosing a chair, keep the following points in mind:

1. Seat Height and Depth
Since most desks have a fixed height, a chair that allows you to adjust the height according to your body is crucial. As for the seat cushion: if it is too small and leaves too much of your thighs hanging, you may feel the urge to cross your legs or sit tailor-style. Conversely, if the seat is too deep, you won't be able to reach the backrest even when sitting all the way back, leading to insufficient lumbar support.

2. Cushion Material and Thickness
When sitting, the body’s weight rests primarily on the sit bones (ischium). If the seat surface or cushion is too thin or hard, it can cause discomfort in the buttocks over time, leading you to shift your posture to sit on the fleshier parts of your seat. However, this causes the body to lean backward, potentially putting the weight of your body on your spine and leading to further issues.

3. Backrest Support
A suitable chair should provide sufficient support at the lumbar (lower back) section of the backrest. Additionally, the backrest should be higher than the lower edge of the shoulder blades to ensure full support when leaning back to rest.

By learning the correct sitting posture and choosing a good chair, you can focus better at work and feel more relaxed after hours. However, do not forget that no matter how correct your posture is, sitting for long periods is ultimately unhealthy. Remember to stand up every 15 to 30 minutes to drink some water or move around a bit.
